WSAZ presents at University of Zimbabwe Public talk
The newly founded Water Scientists Association of Zimbabwe (WSAZ) had the exceptional opportunity to present at a public lecture held at the University of Zimbabwe Engineering Faculty on the 30th of October 2017. Two of the founding members of WSAZ, Delight Mhiribidi and Colleta Tundu, were present to do the presentation. The aim was to articulate the inception of WSAZ and engage with potential members and partners as well as to lobby for support from the more experienced water experts.
Present in the audience was a highly esteemed delegation of three people from China, amongst them was the Vice President of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) who is also the President of International Water Resources Association (IWRA) – Professor Xia Jun. Also present were the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, representatives from WaterNet, Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA), Zimbabwe Institute of Engineers (ZIE), University of Zimbabwe (UZ) staff as well as Masters students in the Civil Engineering Department.
We introduced WSAZ, its vision, and objectives; and spoke about why there is a need for such an association. We also invited interested people to become members of the association, as well as our sought-after affiliation with IAHS. WSAZ received glowing commendation from the IAHS and a promise of potential support. Professor Jun invited us to submit our concept note as well as the presentation so as to seek support from IAHS in setting up the association. You can find our presentation here.
This was our first and remarkable milestone for WSAZ and we aim to put it to great use and make an excellent association and network of water experts in Zimbabwe.
To conclude, we’d like to acknowledge and express immense gratitude to Dr. Hodson Makurira, The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Zimbabwe for the opportunity to present at such a public forum with an esteemed audience. Without him, it would not have been possible.
